Geneva airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Geneva sits in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, midway along Seneca Lake. It is a small city with no scheduled air service, so almost every visitor arrives through Ithaca or Syracuse and covers the last stretch by road. Compare the two airports on total door-to-door time, not just flight price.

Ithaca is closer and simpler. Syracuse has more airlines, more nonstops and usually cheaper fares, but adds roughly half an hour of driving each way. If you are continuing to other Finger Lakes towns, a car rented at either airport is the most flexible choice.

Ithaca is the closest commercial airport to Geneva. It is small, with a handful of daily flights, mostly connecting through larger hubs. Because the terminal is compact, you can be in a rental car or a taxi within minutes of landing.

Rental cars are available at the airport; book ahead, especially in summer and during Cornell University events, when availability tightens. If you are not driving, arrange a taxi or ride-hailing pickup before you land, as the queue can be thin outside peak flights.

Syracuse is the larger of the two airports and the usual choice if you want a nonstop flight or a cheaper fare. It sits north of the Finger Lakes, so the drive to Geneva runs south along Interstate 81 and then west, roughly 60 to 70 minutes depending on traffic and where in Geneva you are staying.

All the major rental brands operate here, and there is more choice of flights and departure times. The trade-off is the extra driving at both ends of the trip. In winter, lake-effect snow can slow this route, so build in buffer time for a flight home.

If you are staying downtown and only exploring Geneva itself, you can skip the car and use taxis or walk. If you plan to visit wineries along Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen or other Finger Lakes towns, a car pays for itself quickly.

Upstate New York is car country. Outside the compact centre of Geneva, distances between wineries, parks and neighbouring towns are too long to walk, and public transport is minimal. Plan on driving unless you are staying put.

Tipping follows US norms: 15–20% for taxis and ride-hailing, 18–22% at sit-down restaurants. Rental car insurance sold at the counter is often expensive; check whether your credit card or home policy already covers you before you travel.

In winter, check road conditions before setting out and keep an ice scraper in the car. In summer, book accommodation and rentals early, as the Finger Lakes fill up on weekends.
