General Santos
Heneral Santos
Two nights is enough: one for the tuna city and Sarangani Bay, one for Mount Matutum or a Gumasa beach run. Skip it if you want beaches only.
General Santos, called GenSan, is the tuna capital of the Philippines and the southern gateway to Soccsksargen. It sits on Sarangani Bay, outside the typhoon belt, with Mount Matutum to the north and Gumasa's white sand about two hours south. Most travellers use it as a stop between Davao and Koronadal, or as a base for the Tuna Festival in late August and early September.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Smile, handshake; 'po' to elders; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Beckoning: Palm down, wave; avoid: Palm up (used for animals)
- Invitations: Accept food offered or decline politely; avoid: Refusing bluntly
- Time: Expect 'Filipino time' socially; avoid: Lateness for flights and boats
- Churches: Covered clothes; avoid: Loud tours during Mass
Scams and watch-outs
- Tricycle and taxi drivers may quote a flat rate to visitors: agree the fare or insist on the meter before you get in.
- Afternoon downpours Jun–Oct flood some streets; keep bags in plastic.
- Mount Matutum is an active volcano and the trail is unmarked in places: go with a local guide.
- Some bars and restobars have no posted prices: ask the total before you order.
GenSan is a working port city, not a resort: petty theft and overcharging are the main risks, and the city is outside the typhoon belt. Keep valuables out of sight in markets, use metered taxis at night, and check your government's current advisory for Mindanao before you book.
