Geiranger
Go for 1–2 nights in Jun–Aug only: the fjord village is a day-trip port for cruise crowds, so sleep here and hike early or stay late.
Geiranger is a village of about 200 people at the end of the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, and in summer it takes in several thousand visitors a day from cruise ships and coaches. The fjord, the viewpoints and the waterfall walk are the whole point; the village itself is small. One night covers the classic sights, two nights let you add a fjord kayak or the Dalsnibba road without rushing. Outside the summer season most hotels, buses and mountain roads shut; the Geiranger–Hellesylt car ferry runs from 1 May to 30 Sep.

Get around
The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. For the fjord, the Geiranger–Hellesylt car ferry doubles as a sightseeing boat with commentary; kayaks can be rented at the dock. Buses and tours run to Dalsnibba, Flydalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen in summer. A car helps for the mountain passes but parking in the village is tight on cruise days.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names; avoid: Small talk that is too personal
- Nature: Greet other hikers, close gates, carry litter out; avoid: Loud music on trails
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or chocolates; 'takk for maten' after the meal; avoid: Arriving late
- Conversation: Modest, factual, humorous; avoid: Showing off wealth — Norwegians are rich but understated
- 17 May: Dress up, join the crowds, wave a flag; avoid: Treating the parades as a tourist show
- Queues: Take a number; avoid: Pushing in
Scams and watch-outs
- Cruise days flood the village: check the port schedule and plan hikes for early morning or after the ships leave.
- Mountain roads (route 63 over Geirangervegen and Ørnevegen, Dalsnibba toll road) close with snow, often Oct–May.
- Weather changes fast and rain is common even in Jul: bring layers and waterproofs.
- The Dalsnibba toll road charges per vehicle: 80 kr for a car, 50 kr for a motorcycle.
- Book ferries, hotels and campsites well ahead for Jun–Aug.
Norway is calm and Geiranger is a small, safe village; the real risks are steep, wet hiking paths, fast-changing mountain weather and cold fjord water. Tell someone your route, wear grippy shoes and do not swim from the fjord without a plan.
