Geeveston
Stay one night in Geeveston if you are doing the Tahune Airwalk or Hartz Mountains next morning; as a day-trip it works from Huonville (20 min), not from Hobart (55 km each way).
Geeveston is a small timber-and-orchard town on the Huon Highway, 55 km south of Hobart and the last stop for fuel and supplies before the Southern Forests. It works as a one-night base for the Tahune Airwalk and the Hartz Mountains, not as a destination on its own. Bring cash: the only ATM is in the IGA and charges a fee.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The only ATM is in the IGA and charges a usage fee: withdraw cash in Huonville or Hobart first.
- Fuel and shops are limited south of town: fill up before the Tahune or Hartz run.
- The Hartz Mountains road can close in snow or ice in winter: check road conditions before setting out.
- Mobile coverage is patchy in the Southern Forests and on the Hartz plateau.
Very safe. The real risks are the cold, wet Southern Forests weather, wildlife on the road at dusk and dawn, and running out of fuel or cash south of town.
