Gboko
Give Gboko one night, two at most: it is a market and Tiv-culture stop on the Katsina-ala–Makurdi road, not a sightseeing base.
Gboko is one of Benue State's busiest commercial towns and the seat of the Tor-Tiv, the paramount ruler of the Tiv people. Yams, cassava, rice and beans move through its district markets in bulk, and the town's sights — Mkar Hill, the Tor-Tiv Palace, the J.S. Tarka tomb — sit close to the centre. There is no airport and no train station; you arrive by road from Makurdi or Abuja, and most travellers treat it as a one-night stop between the state capital and the Katsina-ala road. Roads inside town are rough, so build in slack and travel in daylight.

Get around
Keke Napep tricycles are the default for short hops and cope best with broken roads; agree the fare before you board. Minibuses run fixed routes with conductors and are the cheapest option. Okada motorbike taxis are fastest but the riskiest — riders speed, make illegal U-turns and sometimes inflate fares at night. There is no useful city bus map; ask your hotel to write destinations in English for the driver.
