Voykit pocket guide · Democratic Republic of the Congo
Gbadolite
Skip unless you are a hardcore Congo traveller with a private plane: the ruined palaces of Mobutu are a half-day curiosity, and the town has no functioning tourism infrastructure in 2026.
Gbadolite was Mobutu Sese Seko's showcase town, with a Concorde-capable airport and marble palaces. After the 1997 civil war, everything was looted. Today it is a quiet, poor town of about 200,000 people. The only reason to come is to see the decayed Palais des Bambous and the empty Motel Nzekele. Roads are bad, flights are rare, and the US/Canada advise against all travel to the DRC.
