Gawler
Skip as a base unless you are visiting family or the Barossa: Gawler is a 50–60 min Adelaide commuter train ride, and most visitors day-trip it or pass through.
Gawler is a historic colonial town about 40 km north of Adelaide, on the edge of the Barossa. It has a compact main street, a National Trust museum and a racecourse, but it is a commuter town rather than a destination: the reason to come is the train line, the Barossa gateway position and cheap beds compared with Adelaide.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: 35–40 °C days in Jan–Feb; carry water and plan indoor stops.
- Off-peak trains are roughly hourly and the last service back from Adelaide is early evening: check the timetable before a night out.
- Rural roads north and east have wildlife at dusk and dawn.
- Some pubs and cafés close early on Sundays and public holidays.
Gawler is a quiet commuter town and feels safe by day and evening; the real risks are summer heat, unlit rural roads at night and the early last train back from Adelaide.
