Give it one full day by car from Ottawa or Gatineau; add a second only if you camp, paddle or ski. No car: bus 34 or 59 to the south edge, then walk.
Gatineau Park is a 361 km² wedge of federal land 4 km north of downtown Ottawa, run by the National Capital Commission, not Parks Canada. It is the closest real outdoors to the capital: lookouts, lakes, beaches, 165 km of hiking trails and about 200 km of cross-country ski trails. Most visitors do it as a day trip; campers and skiers stay longer.

Scams and watch-outs
- Parking lots at Meech Lake, Pink Lake and Champlain Lookout fill on fall weekends; arrive before mid-morning.
- Some parkways close to cars on certain days in summer for cyclists and walkers: check the NCC shuttle and closure calendar before you drive in.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the northern sectors; download an offline map.
- Black bears and two wolf packs live in the remote sections. Store food in your car or a locker, never in a tent.
- Swimming is only safe at the signed beaches; the lakes are cold even in August.
- Nudist use of some secluded corners is unofficial and not permitted in the park: expect to meet people without clothes on trail 36 northwest of parking lot P11.
Low-crime federal park; the real risks are cold water, unmarked cliff edges on the Eardley Escarpment, bears in remote sectors and getting lost without an offline map. 911 works throughout.
