Gateshead sits on the south bank of the Tyne, directly across from Newcastle, and its best sights — the Baltic, the Sage and the tilting Millennium Bridge — are on the riverfront within a 15-minute walk of each other. Most travellers sleep in Newcastle and cross for a half-day, or stay riverside in Gateshead for cheaper chain hotels and the same view. The Angel of the North and Gibside need a bus or car.
