The Gascoyne is 135,000 sq km of dry coast with one thing that justifies the drive: Ningaloo Reef, the only big fringing reef you can swim to from shore. Everything else — Carnarvon's space museum, Shark Bay, Mount Augustus — is a long, hot detour. Fly or drive to Exmouth or Coral Bay, stay put, and treat the rest as optional add-ons only if you have a week or more and your own car.
