Gardenstown
Gamrie
Go for one night, not a day trip: the village is 1 h 45 min from Aberdeen by bus and the coast path needs a full afternoon.
Gardenstown (Gamrie) is a small fishing village on the Aberdeenshire coast, built into a steep bay with the houses stacked above the harbour. It is the biggest of three villages on this stretch, with Crovie a walk west and Pennan a drive east. There is one pub with rooms, one small museum and a clifftop path to a seabird colony at Troup Head. Come for a quiet night and coastal walking, not for a list of sights.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Mobile signal is poor or absent in Gardenstown, Pennan and on the approach roads; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
- The lane into Crovie is too narrow for cars: park at the south end and walk down.
- The B9031 coast road is single-track in places with passing places; allow more time than the map suggests.
- Most food stops serving by 20:00; the Spar on Macduff Rd closes at 19:00 weekdays and 17:00 Saturday.
- Check the Gamrie Heritage Centre opening before you go: it is seasonal and limited to weekday afternoons.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are cliff edges, wet paths, fast weather changes and no mobile signal. Tell someone your route if you walk the coast path alone.
