Gagetown
Give Gagetown half a day, not a night: Tilley House and the old court house are open 10:00–17:00 in July–August, and the village is a 30-min taxi from Oromocto.
Gagetown is a village of about 700 people on the Saint John River, between Grand Lake and Washademoak Lake, in the Saint John River Valley. It is the birthplace of Sir Leonard Tilley, a Father of Confederation, and it holds an artists' colony, a marina and three small heritage museums. Most travellers see it as a stop on the drive between Fredericton and Saint John, or as a base for sailing and paddling. There is no commercial airport and no rail: you arrive by car, or by bus to Oromocto plus a taxi.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Museum hours are seasonal: July–August daily 10:00–17:00, May–June and September–November by appointment only.
- The nearest bus stop is Oromocto, not Gagetown: budget a 30-min taxi each way.
- Cell coverage and fuel are thin outside the village; fill up in Oromocto or Fredericton.
- River levels and currents change with the season; ask locally before swimming or launching a boat.
Gagetown is a small, quiet village and violent crime is rare. The real risks are rural driving at night (deer and moose), winter ice, and river currents: ask locally before you swim or launch.
