Gabrovo is a long, narrow textile town strung along the Yantra River at the centre of Bulgaria, between the Balkan Mountains and the Shipka Pass road. Its own sights fill a day; the reason most travellers stop is the ring of places around it — the Etar open-air village, Bozhentsi, Dryanovo and Sokolski monasteries, the Shipka memorial and the Uzana ski area. A car turns a pass-through into a two-night base.

- The train arrives via a spur from Tsareva Livada with layovers of up to two hours; the bus is usually faster.
- Mountain roads to Uzana and the Shipka Pass ice up in winter; snow tyres or chains are needed.
- Museum ticket prices and hours change; the Humour House and history museum close for lunch.
Gabrovo is a calm, low-crime town and walking the centre after dark is normal. The real risks are mountain-road weather, unlit verges on the E-85, and taxis without a meter — agree the fare or use an app.
