Füssen
Sleep 1–2 nights in Füssen's old town, not in Hohenschwangau: castle tickets sell out weeks ahead, so book first, then plan the rest.
Füssen is a small Bavarian town at the end of the Romantic Road, 3 km from Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. The old town itself is compact and walkable, with the Hohes Schloss and St Mang's Abbey. Most visitors come for the castles and leave the same day; staying one or two nights lets you see the town, the Lechfall and the lakes without the day-trip crush.

Get around
The old town is walkable. Buses 73 and 78 run from Füssen to the castles. Trains connect to Munich and Augsburg; buses cross to Reutte in Austria. A car helps for Linderhof, Wieskirche and the smaller castles.

Füssen is a low-crime small town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are mountain weather, icy paths in winter and crowds around the castles; watch your bag in the bus queues.
