Fresno
Use Fresno as a 1-night car stop for Yosemite or Sequoia, not a destination: the city itself fills half a day, the parks are 1.5–2 h away.
Fresno is the largest city in the San Joaquin Valley and the practical gateway to Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Almost everyone arrives by car on CA-99 and leaves within a day. The Underground Gardens, the zoo and a walkable downtown block are worth the stop; the rest of the city is strip malls and freeways.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: 38–43 °C is normal in Jul–Aug; carry water and do outdoor sights before 10:00.
- Winter tule fog on CA-99 can cut visibility to under 100 m; slow down and allow extra time.
- The Amtrak/Greyhound block downtown is best avoided on foot late at night.
- Yosemite and Sequoia entry in summer needs a timed reservation or shuttle plan: check the park site before you drive.
Fresno is fine by day in the tourist core; the real risks are summer heat, winter tule fog on CA-99 and a few downtown blocks after dark. Keep bags out of sight in parked cars.
