French River
Come for 2–3 nights if you paddle or fish; 1 night only as a Highway 69 stop between Sudbury and Parry Sound.
French River is a 110 km Canadian Heritage River running from Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay, wrapped in a provincial park with about 230 campsites. It is a cottage, canoe and fishing area spread over many small communities, not a walkable town. Almost everyone arrives by car on Highway 69 or Highway 64, and the river itself is the reason to come.

Scams and watch-outs
- Cell coverage is patchy away from Highway 69; download offline maps and note lodge phone numbers.
- Fuel and food are spread out; fill up in Sudbury, Parry Sound or North Bay before the last stretch.
- Open water is cold even in July; wear a life jacket and check wind before crossing big bays.
- Blackflies and mosquitoes are heavy from late May into July: bring repellent and a head net.
- Many lodges and campgrounds take bookings only, and some close outside summer: confirm dates and the boat transfer before you drive.
Low crime and a quiet rural area; the real risks are cold water, no cell signal, wildlife on the road at dusk and long drives after dark. Tell someone your route on the water.
