Fredericksburg is a German-settled Hill Country town of about 9,000 people, roughly 71 mi (114 km) northwest of San Antonio and about 80 mi (129 km) west of Austin on US-290 (check the San Antonio figure). Almost everything worth doing sits on or near Main Street, but the wineries, Enchanted Rock and the best food are spread across the county, so a car decides your trip. Two nights is the working answer: one full day in town, one day out. Spring (Mar–May) and fall (Sep–Nov) are the good windows; July–August heat and weekend festival crowds are the reasons to avoid it. It is a safe, small town; the real risks are deer on the road at dusk, alcohol on a rural drive, and restaurants that close at 9PM or take cash only.

Get around
A car is the practical default: the town is walkable along Main Street, but wineries, Enchanted Rock and the best out-of-town restaurants are 10–30 mi away with no useful bus. Greyhound stops on the outskirts; from there you still need a car or a rideshare. In town, park once near Main and walk — 3–4 hours covers the shops. Do not drink and drive on the rural two-lane roads; use a winery shuttle or a designated driver.
