Franschhoek is a town, not a city, in a single valley on the R45 in the Cape Winelands, about an hour's drive from Cape Town. It is built around one main street of restaurants and wine estates. It is a place to eat and drink rather than to sightsee: most visitors come for a day from Stellenbosch or Cape Town, and one night is enough to cover the village, a couple of estates and the Huguenot Memorial. Two nights suit travellers who want a long lunch and the Franschhoek Motor Museum at L'Ormarins.

Get around
The village is walkable: the main street and the blocks around the Huguenot Memorial take 15–20 min on foot. Wine estates are spread along the R45 and the pass road, so use a car, a bicycle, an estate shuttle or a booked wine tour. There is no train service; minibus taxis run to Stellenbosch and Paarl but are not aimed at visitors.

- Summer afternoons reach the mid-30s °C; carry water on walks and cycle rides.
Franschhoek is a small wine town and the centre is walkable in daylight. The real risks are drinking and driving on the R45, unlit farm roads after dark, and petty theft from parked cars: lock everything away and book a driver for tastings.
