Layover in Frankfurt: what to do

Yes, if your layover is long enough. Frankfurt Airport sits about 12 km southwest of the city centre, and the S-Bahn runs directly from the terminal to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in roughly 15 minutes. That makes a 6-hour layover workable and a 12-hour layover genuinely useful.

The practical minimum is 5 hours: about 30 minutes each way for transport, 45–60 minutes to clear security and passport control on your return, and the rest for the city. Under 5 hours, stay in the terminal — the risk of missing your onward flight is not worth a rushed walk through Frankfurt.

Two conditions change the answer. If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you are free to leave. If you must collect and re-check them, or if your onward flight is on a separate ticket, add 60–90 minutes and treat 8 hours as the real minimum.

Germany is in the Schengen area. Leaving the airport means entering Schengen, so normal entry rules apply — a transit visa is not a separate thing for most travellers. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland can enter Germany visa-free for short stays and do not need a transit visa for a layover.

If you hold a passport that requires a Schengen visa, you need either a valid Schengen visa or an airport transit visa (type A) if you stay airside. An airport transit visa does not let you leave the terminal. Check your specific case with the German mission in your country before booking.

If your bags are not checked through, or you want to travel light, use the left-luggage counters at the airport. They are in Terminal 1 (near the long-distance train station) and Terminal 2, and charge per bag per day — budget around €6–8 (2026 estimate). Lockers are also available in some areas.

Most airlines at Frankfurt will through-check bags on a single ticket, so you often do not need storage at all. If you are on two separate tickets, collect your bags, store them, and allow extra time to check in again for the onward flight.

The S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 run from the airport's regional station (under Terminal 1) to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and continue to the city centre. Journey time is about 15 minutes to the main station, 20–25 minutes to the Römer area if you change to the U-Bahn. A single ticket is around €5.90 (2026 estimate); a day ticket costs a little more and covers trams and U-Bahn.

Taxis from the airport to the centre take 25–35 minutes and cost roughly €35–45 (2026 estimate) depending on traffic. The long-distance train station (Fernbahnhof) also connects the airport to other German cities, but for a city layover the S-Bahn is the simplest choice.

Coming back, allow 45–60 minutes for security and passport control at peak times. Frankfurt is a major hub, so queues can be long in the late afternoon and early evening.

Six hours is enough for one compact loop: S-Bahn to Hauptbahnhof, U-Bahn or a 20-minute walk to Römerberg and the rebuilt old town, a look at the Main riverbank, and back. Skip museums — you do not have the time.

Twelve hours opens up a proper half-day. Add the Städel Museum or the Museum Embankment (Museumsufer), walk along the Main, and eat a sit-down meal. Frankfurt's apple wine taverns in Sachsenhausen are a 15-minute walk south of the river.

Twenty-four hours is a full day. Consider a day trip: the Rhine valley, Heidelberg or Mainz are all reachable by train in under 90 minutes. Or stay in the city, see the Palmengarten and the Goethe House, and take an evening walk along the river.
