France in April: what to expect

April is a transition month: winter has gone, summer has not arrived. Expect mild days, cold mornings and evenings, and rain that arrives and clears within hours rather than settling in for a week. The Mediterranean south warms first and is the most reliable place for sun; the north and the Atlantic coast stay cooler and wetter.

The practical consequence is layering rather than a single coat. A morning in Paris can start at 6–8 °C and reach the mid-teens by mid-afternoon, then drop again after sunset. In the mountains, snow is still on the high ground and ski lifts can be running early in the month.

Crowds build around the Easter school holidays, which fall in April in most years and run for roughly two weeks. Outside those dates, April is one of the calmer months of the French year: museums, trains and village hotels are workable without booking months ahead.

Prices sit in the middle band. Flights and TGV fares rise sharply for the holiday weekends and the first weekend of the school break, then fall back. Hotel rates in Paris and on the Riviera follow the same pattern. If your dates are flexible, the first ten days of April are usually the cheapest and quietest.

The French calendar in April is built around Easter (dates move each year) and the school holidays that follow it. Expect family traffic on trains and motorways, longer queues at the big châteaux, and some small restaurants closing for a week.

Beyond Easter, the month is light on national events. Local food markets, brocantes and village fairs restart as the weather improves, and the first spring race meetings and cycling races appear on the calendar. Confirm dates locally before planning a trip around any single event.

Paris is at its most usable: mild enough to walk all day, not yet hot, and the parks and gardens are at their best. Book the big sights for the morning and keep the afternoon free for walking.

The Loire valley and Burgundy suit April well — châteaux and vineyards reopen, roads are quiet, and the light is good for driving between small towns. The Mediterranean south is the safest bet for sunshine: Provence and the Riviera are warm enough for terraces and coastal walks, though the sea is still cold for swimming.

In the Alps, early April is still ski season; by the end of the month many resorts have shut and the valleys are between seasons. Corsica is warming up but ferries and some hotels are still on a reduced schedule.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A light waterproof shell, a warm mid-layer and comfortable walking shoes cover almost everything April can throw at you. Add sunglasses and a hat for the south, and a warmer jacket if you are going into the mountains.

March is cooler and quieter, with the south warming first and many châteaux still closed. May is warmer and greener but brings three public holidays that fill trains and hotels. June is the start of the high season, with long days and rising prices.
