Foster
Use Foster as a one-night base for Wilsons Prom: 2 h 15 min from Melbourne by car, no public transport to the park gate, so drive or skip.
Foster is a small Gippsland town on the road to Wilsons Promontory, about 1,800 people, with a main street of cafés and a visitor centre. It is not a sight in itself: people sleep here because beds near the park gate are scarce and expensive in summer. One night covers it; two if you want a full day inside the park and a slow morning after.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport to the Wilsons Prom gate: without a car you cannot reach the park.
- Wilsons Prom campsites and Tidal River beds sell out for summer and Easter; book on the Parks Victoria site.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the roads at dawn and dusk: slow down, especially on the C444 to Yanakie.
- Mobile coverage is patchy inside the park; download maps before you leave town.
Foster is a quiet country town and feels safe; the real risks are wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, cold wet weather on park walks, and no phone signal inside Wilsons Prom.
