Fort William
An Gearasdan
Base here 2 nights for Ben Nevis, Glen Nevis and the Jacobite train; skip the town itself in an hour, it is a hub not a sight.
Fort William is the west Highland hub at the foot of the Great Glen: Ben Nevis, the Nevis Range gondola, the Caledonian Canal and the Jacobite steam train all start here. The town centre is small and cut off from the loch shore by the A82, so treat it as a bed and a launchpad. Two nights covers the headline sights; three if you climb Ben Nevis or ride the train.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Ben Nevis weather can change quickly. Carry suitable clothing and navigation equipment; winter routes require technical mountaineering skills.
- Midgies can be troublesome in summer, especially near water.
- The A82 separates the town centre from the loch shore; use designated crossings.
- The Jacobite runs seasonally and tickets can sell out; check availability and book ahead.
- Some roads in the glens are single-track with passing places.
A small, low-crime town; the real risks are mountain weather, single-track roads and midges. Tell someone your Ben Nevis plan and carry a map and compass.
