Fort Walton Beach
Stay 2–3 nights on Okaloosa Island or the Miracle Strip for the beach; skip the town centre unless you want the mound museum or a cheap bed.
Fort Walton Beach is a small Emerald Coast city of about 19,500 people, 40 miles east of Pensacola and just west of Destin. The draw is the white-sand beach and calm Gulf water on Okaloosa Island, plus Eglin Air Force Base's free armament museum and a 1,000-year-old Native American mound. Two or three nights covers it; most people come for the beach and use it as a base for Destin and the wider Emerald Coast.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: US 98 (Miracle Strip Parkway) runs along the coast and Eglin Parkway (SR 85) links the city to the airport and I-10. Okaloosa Island is walkable once you are on it, but the strip is long and hot. Rideshare and taxis exist but are thin outside the beach season.
