Fort Smith is a town of about 2,250 people on the Slave River, just north of the Alberta border, and the service base for Wood Buffalo National Park. It is small, walkable in the centre, and reached almost entirely by air through Fort Smith Regional Airport (YSM). Two nights covers the museum, the mission park and a river or park day; one night is enough if you are only passing through to the park.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk: museum, mission park, shops and restaurants are within about 15 minutes on foot. There is no local bus network; taxis and pre-booked rides cover the airport and the golf course. A car or a tour operator is needed for Wood Buffalo National Park and the rapids viewpoints.
