Fort Meade
Give Fort Meade half a day on a Polk County drive: the 1880s Broadway blocks, a Peace River park, then move on. Sleep in Bartow or Lakeland.
Fort Meade is Polk County's oldest town, founded in 1849 on a military road between Tampa and Fort Pierce. It is a few blocks of brick storefronts, churches and houses from the 1880s and 1890s, plus Peace River parks and a golf resort on reclaimed phosphate land. There is no hotel strip and no nightlife, so most travellers see it as a two-hour stop between Bartow and Frostproof rather than a base.

Get around
The historic core is walkable in 10–15 minutes: US 17 and US 98 meet in the centre and everything is a few blocks around it. For the river parks, Streamsong or Homeland you need a car; rentals are in Bartow and Lakeland. Taxis serve all of Polk County but are thin on the ground — book ahead.
