Fort McKay
Go only if you have a reason to be on Highway 63: one night in a work lodge, or a fuel-and-food stop between Fort McMurray and the oil sands sites.
Fort McKay is a small Cree and Dene community on the Athabasca River, 60 km north of Fort McMurray, surrounded by oil sands operations. There is no sightseeing circuit here: the hamlet has a store, a gas station and a Tim Hortons, and the lodging is built for oil sands workers. Treat it as a practical stop on the Highway 63 corridor, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Wildfire is the real risk: Highway 63 and the community can be evacuated or closed in May–August. Check Alberta wildfire and road status before you drive.
- Services on Highway 63 are sparse: fill up in Fort McMurray and carry water.
- Winter brings extreme cold and ice; check road conditions and drive with a full tank.
- Cell coverage and fuel north of the hamlet are limited; do not count on either.
- Lodges are worker-oriented: confirm public availability and a rate in writing before you rely on a bed.
Low crime risk in a small community; the real hazards are wildfire, extreme cold and long, thinly serviced drives on Highway 63. Tell someone your route and check road and fire status first.
