Fort Macleod
Give Fort Macleod one night, or a half-day stop on Highway 3: the fort museum and Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump are the whole reason to come.
Fort Macleod is a town of about 3,000 on the Oldman River in southern Alberta, halfway between Calgary and Lethbridge on Highway 2 and Highway 3. It was the first headquarters of the North-West Mounted Police, and its brick main street survived a century of stagnation, which is why film crews keep using it. Two sights carry the visit: the fort museum in town and Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, 18 km northwest. Everything else is a walkable main street of about four blocks.
