Fort Laramie
Half a day: walk the fort grounds and museum, then drive on. Not a base — sleep in Torrington or Douglas.
Fort Laramie is a tiny town (pop. 230) whose reason to exist is the Fort Laramie National Historic Site — a restored 19th-century fur-trade post and military fort on the Oregon, California and Mormon trails. The site takes 2–3 hours to see. There is no reason to stay overnight unless you are passing through on a road trip and need a bed.
