Treat Fort Knox as a 2–4 hour stop on the US 31W corridor, not a base: the Patton Museum is the only civilian sight on post, and most of the post is off-limits.
Fort Knox is an active U.S. Army post in the Kentucky Derby Region, best known for the United States Bullion Depository that holds a large share of the country's gold reserve. Civilians can drive through on US 31W and visit the free Patton Museum, but cannot stop or turn off the highway without authorisation. Almost everyone sleeps in Radcliff, Elizabethtown or Brandenburg and pairs the stop with Louisville or the Bourbon Trail.

Get around
You need a car. US 31W runs north–south past the post and links Louisville (about 60 min) with Elizabethtown (about 15 min). KY 313 comes in from I-65 at exit 102 to the east. On post, street signs are labelled but building signs use military names, so a post map helps; the MWR Guidebook is the most useful free map for visitors.

- Summer heat and humidity in July–August; winter ice on I-65 and US 31W.
