Fort Erie
Give Fort Erie one night, or a half-day stop between Niagara Falls and Buffalo: the fort, the race track and the river path, not a base.
Fort Erie is a town of about 33,000 on the Niagara River, directly across from Buffalo, New York, and the Canadian end of the Peace Bridge. Its draw is Old Fort Erie and the War of 1812 story, a free horse-racing track, and the southern end of the Niagara Parkway. Most travellers pass through on the QEW between Toronto and the US border; a single night is enough, and it works well as a cheaper bed than Niagara Falls in summer.
