Fort-de-France

Fort-de-France is a morning city: do the market and the waterfront before 10:30, take an indoor break at midday, and check shop hours before you plan a Sunday.

The capital of Martinique is compact and walkable, but hot, and much of it closes at midday and on Sundays. Four clusters cover a first visit: La Savane and the fort, the cathedral and library, the Grand Marché, and the streets around the town hall. Beaches and the north are trips from the island's south or north bases, not from a city bed.

FDF to La Savane: one airport taxi on a regulated tariff, 20–45 minutes depending on the Lamentin traffic — the risk is a late landing when the rank thins out, not the distance.

Get around

Walk inside the centre; taxi to the airport and for the ferry to the south.

  • Creole 'sa ou fè?' means 'how are you?'; answer 'mwen la' (I'm here, fine).
  • Menus are often French only; photos and translation apps help.

  • Cover up in shops, churches and the market: beachwear is for the beach.
