Fort Chipewyan
Go only if you have a reason to be here: fly in for 1–2 nights, or skip it and spend the time in Wood Buffalo National Park instead.
Fort Chipewyan is a hamlet of about 800 people on the west shore of Lake Athabasca, 250 km north of Fort McMurray and one of Alberta's oldest European settlements, founded as a fur-trade post in 1788. There is no road in for most of the year: you fly, or you wait for the winter ice road. Come for the lake, the museum and the gateway to Wood Buffalo National Park, not for a resort.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No all-season road: access is by air, by boat in summer, or by the winter ice road only. Check the winter-road hotline before you plan a drive.
- On ice bridges, keep to the posted speed: too fast and you push a wave ahead of you that can break the ice at the far shore.
- There is one fuel station between Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan (Fort McKay's industrial park) and almost no services. Fuel up and carry what you need.
- Groceries at the Northern Store are expensive: budget roughly $10 for four tomatoes and $13 for seedless grapes, and bring what you can.
- Cell and data coverage is thin outside the hamlet; download offline maps and tell someone your plan before you go out on the lake.
- Summer wildfire smoke can ground small aircraft and close the winter road; build a spare day into any tight connection.
This is a remote community reached by air, boat or winter ice road. The main risks are environmental — cold water, fast-changing weather, wildfire smoke, thin ice and long distances with no services. Check conditions and access rules before you travel.
