Folly Beach
Folly Beach, South Carolina
Give Folly Beach 2 nights if you want beach plus surf; day-trip it from Charleston (25–35 min drive) if you only want the pier and a swim.
Folly Beach is a 12 sq mi barrier island at the end of SC-171, about 10 mi south of downtown Charleston, with a surf beach, a fishing pier and a small business district on Center Street. It is a beach base for a Charleston trip, not a sightseeing destination: two nights covers the beach, the pier and the Morris Island Lighthouse viewpoint; one full day is enough if you drive in from the city.

Get around
The island is small but spread out: Center Street and the pier are walkable, the east and west beach ends are 2–4 km (1.2–2.5 mi) away. Bring or rent a car, or use a bike — there is no local bus to the beach. Parking lots in town charge by the space (about $5–10 a day, check signs); street parking near the pier fills by mid-morning in summer. Rideshare from downtown Charleston works but surges at closing time. The island is small but spread out: Center Street and the pier are walkable, the east and west beach ends are 1.2–2.5 mi (2–4 km) away. - Center Street / pier area
- Walk to the pier, bars and restaurants; the only true walkable zone. Hotel and condo rates peak in summer.
- East Ashley Avenue (east end)
- Quieter beach, walk or short drive to the trailhead for the Morris Island Lighthouse viewpoint; fewer shops.
- West Ashley Avenue / County Park side
- Closest to Folly Beach County Park, lifeguarded beach in season; 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) from Center Street, so a car or bike helps.Closest to Folly Beach County Park, lifeguarded beach in season; 1.2–1.9 mi (2–3 km) from Center Street, so a car or bike helps.
- James Island (off-island)
- Cheaper beds 10–15 min from the beach on SC-171; you trade walkability for price and parking ease.
Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).
- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms and rip currents: swim near lifeguards, and note lifeguards are seasonal (roughly late May–early Sep).
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; the island is under an evacuation zone and causeway flooding can close SC-171.
- Parking tickets are enforced in season; read the lot signs before you leave the car.
- Center Street bar prices are not always posted — ask before you order.
- The Morris Island Lighthouse is offshore and not open to climb; view it from the beach at the east end.
Folly Beach is a low-crime small town; the real risks are water and weather — rip currents, seasonal lifeguard cover, summer storms and hurricane-season evacuations. Lock your car and bike, and keep to lit streets around Center Street at night.
