Florianopolis is an island capital in southern Brazil: 42 named beaches, a lagoon in the middle, forested hills and a small colonial centre. It is calmer and safer than Rio, but the sights are spread over 54 km of island, so pick one or two bases and expect to move by car or bus. Summer (Dec–Mar) is hot, crowded and expensive; the shoulder months are the better trade.

Get around
Buses connect the centre with the island’s beaches, usually with transfers at regional terminals; allow about 35–60 minutes from the centre to the coast. A direct executive bus also links main beaches with downtown; fare check. A car makes the spread-out island easier to explore. In high season, a centre-to-beach drive can take up to 2 hours.

One of the safer big cities in Brazil, and calmer than Rio, but not crime-free: watch bags on the beaches and in Jurerê nightlife, and never leave valuables visible in a parked car at a trailhead. The bigger day-to-day risks are rip currents on the ocean beaches and high-season traffic.
