Florence nightlife: best areas, bars and safety tips

Florence's night is built around aperitivo, not around clubs. Between about 18:00 and 21:00 bars across the centre put out snacks with a drink, and that is when the city is at its most sociable. After 23:00 the streets thin out fast, so pick your area first and your venue second.

Santo Spirito, on the south bank in Oltrarno, is the most reliable low-key night: a square of bars with outdoor tables, mixed local and student crowds, and prices below the tourist core. Santa Croce draws a younger, louder crowd with late bars and a few small clubs. The streets between the Duomo and Santa Maria Novella station hold wine bars and hotel rooftops with views but higher prices. San Niccolò, further east along the river, is quieter and good for a late drink with a view.

Expect to pay more the closer you are to the Duomo and the less you are standing up. A drink at a bar counter is cheapest; the same drink at a table with a view can cost half as much again. Some venues add a small charge for table service or live music, and a cover charge is normal when food is served.

Hours vary by season and by night of the week. As a working pattern: aperitivo from about 18:00, dinner service until roughly 22:30–23:00, bars until 01:00, and a small number of clubs until 03:00–04:00. Sunday and Monday are the quietest nights, and August empties the city of locals. Confirm times before you cross town.

The historic centre is small enough to cross on foot in 20–25 minutes, and walking is the best way to move between Santo Spirito, Santa Croce and the Duomo. Streets are lit and busy until roughly midnight in the main bar areas; after that they empty quickly.

Buses run across the city during the day and early evening, with a reduced night service. Buy tickets before boarding from a tabaccheria, a newsstand or a ticket machine, and validate them on board; fares are low, a few euros, and inspectors do fine passengers without a validated ticket. Taxis are metered and cannot be hailed in the street: use a rank, such as at Santa Maria Novella station or Piazza della Repubblica, or call one. Ride-hailing coverage in Florence is limited; check what is available on the night. If you are staying outside the centre, agree a return plan before you go out.

Drink prices climb with the view. If budget matters, start in Oltrarno and finish with one rooftop drink rather than the other way round. Standing at the counter is normal and cheaper, and it is how many Italians take a quick glass before dinner.

Florence is a safe city by European standards, and violent crime against visitors is rare. The realistic risks at night are pickpockets in crowds around Santa Maria Novella and the Ponte Vecchio, overpriced bars near the main squares, and drink spiking in busy venues. Keep bags zipped and in front of you, watch your drink, and walk in pairs after midnight. If something goes wrong, the European emergency number is 112; police is 113 and ambulance 118. Report theft to the police for an insurance claim.

April to June and September to October are the best months for an evening out: mild enough to sit outside, busy enough that bars stay open late. July and August are hot and crowded, and many locals leave the city, so some neighbourhood places close while the centre stays busy with visitors.

Winter is quieter and cheaper, with indoor wine bars and fewer outdoor tables. The big nights to avoid if you want a calm drink are weekends in high season and public holidays, when the centre is packed. If you want the local rhythm, go out on a Thursday or Friday, take aperitivo early, eat by 21:00 and finish in Oltrarno.
