Florence in October: what to expect

October is Florence's autumn shift. The first two weeks still feel like late summer: mild mornings, warm afternoons around 21 °C, and long spells of clear sky good for walking the centre or taking a day trip into the hills. From roughly the third week, rain becomes more frequent and the air cools, with evenings dropping to around 11 °C — a jacket becomes necessary rather than optional.

Rain in Florence usually arrives as a heavy afternoon or evening shower rather than all-day drizzle, so a single wet day rarely ruins a trip. The city sits in a basin, which means mornings can be misty and humid until the sun burns it off. Flooding is rare but the Arno has flooded historically; if a red weather alert is issued, stay off the riverbanks and follow local advice.

Sunset moves fast through the month — around 19:00 at the start, closer to 17:00 by the end once clocks change on the last Sunday. Plan outdoor viewpoints like Piazzale Michelangelo for the earlier part of the month.

October is the tail of Florence's high season. The first week still carries September-level crowds, especially around the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi. From mid-month, tour groups thin out noticeably and hotel rates ease. It is not a quiet month — Florence rarely is — but queues at the main museums shorten and you can often walk into smaller churches and trattorias without a wait.

Prices follow the same curve. Expect medium rates overall: cheaper than September and much cheaper than June–August, but higher than November and the winter months. Booking two to three months ahead gets the best combination of choice and price for the centre; staying in Oltrarno or near Santa Maria Novella station usually costs less than the Duomo area.

If your dates are flexible, aim for the second and third weeks: you get autumn light and truffle menus without the first-week rush or the late-month rain.

Autumn is food season in Tuscany. Truffle fairs run in the surrounding hill towns through October and into November, and restaurants in Florence put white truffle and new olive oil on menus. The olive harvest begins late in the month, and some countryside estates open for tastings.

On 4 October, St Francis of Assisi is a national holiday from 2026 — check the current status, as it is a recent change. Offices close and Assisi fills with pilgrims; in Florence most sights stay open but some shops shut. The last Sunday of the month brings the end of daylight saving, so clocks go back an hour.

Check the local tourist office and the city's events calendar for the exact dates of fairs, markets and any museum closures, since these shift year to year.

October suits the classic Florence itinerary. Book timed slots for the Uffizi and the Accademia — the Accademia holds Michelangelo's David and is the shorter visit — and climb Brunelleschi's Dome early in the day if the weather is clear. The Duomo complex, Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella are all comfortable in mild temperatures.

Use the good early-October weather for the outdoor side of the city: Piazzale Michelangelo for the skyline, the Boboli Gardens and Bardini Gardens behind the Pitti Palace, and the Oltrarno workshops south of the river. Day trips work well too — Siena, Pisa, Lucca and San Gimignano are all reachable by train or bus, and the Tuscan countryside is at its best with autumn colour and harvest activity.

Pack for two seasons in one trip. Bring light layers for warm early-October afternoons and a warmer mid-layer, jacket and compact umbrella for the cooler, wetter second half. Comfortable walking shoes matter — Florence's centre is cobbled and you will cover a lot of ground on foot.

Add a small daypack, a refillable water bottle (Florence has public water fountains), and a scarf or light rain shell for evenings. If you plan countryside day trips, a slightly warmer layer helps, as hill towns run a few degrees cooler than the city.
