Florence, Oregon
Florence
Give Florence two nights: one full day for Old Town, the river mouth and the dunes, plus a half-day north to Sea Lion Caves. Skip it as a drive-through.
Florence sits where the Siuslaw River meets the Pacific, on the Central Oregon Coast along US 101. It is a small town — about 7,300 people — with a walkable historic waterfront, the largest coastal dune field in North America on its doorstep, and the highway north to Sea Lion Caves. Most visitors pass through in an afternoon; two nights is the honest minimum if you want the dunes and the coast north of town without rushing.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer weekend lodging on the coast sells out: book weeks ahead.
- Dune sand and wind: bring eye protection and water, and never walk into the dunes without a landmark behind you.
- Sea Lion Caves and some coastal viewpoints close or shorten hours outside summer: check before driving north.
- US 101 can be slow behind RVs in summer; allow extra time for any timed booking.
- Ocean water here is cold year-round and surf and logs are dangerous: watch from the beach, not the water.
Florence is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are natural: cold surf, drifting logs on the beach, soft sand and wind in the dunes, and rain-slick US 101 in winter. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
