Flensburg
Give Flensburg one full day plus a night: old town, harbour and Museumsberg in the morning, Glücksburg Castle or a fjord ferry in the afternoon.
Flensburg is Germany's northern border town, a small harbour city on the Flensburger Förde with a Danish minority, a walkable old centre and a shopping trade that pulls Danes south across the border. It is a comfortable one-night stop between Hamburg and Denmark, not a destination that needs a week. Most of what you came for sits within a 15-minute walk of the pedestrian street Holm.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- The main station is outside the old town: allow 20–25 minutes on foot or take a bus.
- Many shops close on Sundays; the border malls are the exception.
- The Naval Academy Mürwik is an active military site: check access rules before going.
- Summer weekends fill the harbour and hotels: book ahead.
A calm, low-crime small city. The real issues are weather and logistics: wind and rain off the fjord, slippery cobbles, and a station that is a longer walk from the centre than it looks.
