Flaine
Go for 2–3 days of skiing in Le Grand Massif; skip if you want a traditional Alpine village with nightlife — Flaine is car-free, purpose-built and quiet after the lifts close.
Flaine is a 1960s Bauhaus-designed, car-free ski resort in Haute-Savoie, 70 km from Geneva. It sits in the Le Grand Massif ski area (265 km of pistes) and has one of Europe's fastest gondolas. The architecture divides opinion, but the snow record and direct access to the slopes are excellent. Most visitors come for 2–3 days of skiing or snowboarding; summer is quieter, with hiking and mountain biking.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'bonjour madame/monsieur' on entering any shop, bus or office; avoid: Asking a question before saying bonjour — it is read as rude
- Cheek kisses (la bise): Follow the other person's lead; one to four kisses depending on region; avoid: Initiating la bise with strangers or in business
- Addressing people: Use 'vous' and titles until invited otherwise; avoid: First names and 'tu' with older people or staff
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated in restaurants; call the waiter 'monsieur' or 'madame'; avoid: 'Garçon', snapping fingers, asking for the bill before you are finished
- Conversation: Debate is a pleasure; food, politics and philosophy are fair game; avoid: Asking about salary or religion; loud voices on trains
- Dinner at a home: Bring flowers (not chrysanthemums), chocolates or a good bottle; arrive 10–15 minutes late; avoid: Cutting the tip off a cheese wedge or asking for ketchup
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders in churches; avoid: Beachwear in town centres
Scams and watch-outs
- Car-free resort: park at the entrance car parks (pay) and use luggage trolleys or the shuttle.
- The architecture is raw concrete — some find it ugly; check photos before booking.
- Nightlife is limited to a few bars and restaurants; après-ski is low-key.
- Shuttle buses from Geneva run only in winter; summer access is by car or taxi.
Flaine is a safe, family-oriented resort. The main risks are on the slopes: obey piste markers, wear a helmet and check avalanche risk daily. In summer, watch for mountain bikers on trails.
