Fishguard
Abergwaun
Give Fishguard one night, or use it as a ferry or coast-path stop: the town itself is a half-day, the cliffs and the 1797 invasion site are the reason to stay.
Fishguard is a small Pembrokeshire port of about 3,400 people, twinned with Goodwick next door, at the western end of the A40 and the Welsh end of the Stena Line ferry from Rosslare in Ireland. Most travellers pass through on the boat or the coast path; the town rewards a single unhurried night with a harbour, a folk festival in late May and the 1797 invasion memorial on the cliffs above.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The ferry to Rosslare is a crossing, not a short hop: check-in closes well before departure, so arrive early.
- Coastal weather changes fast; the cliff path can be slippery and exposed in wind and rain.
- Many restaurants and cafés close early outside summer; book or eat before 20:00.
- Parking near the harbour is limited in high season.
Fishguard is a small, low-crime town and safe for tourists. The real risks are coastal: cliff edges, fast tides, wet paths and sudden weather, plus late-night drinking in a handful of pubs.
