Airports in Finland: which one to fly into

Helsinki-Vantaa is the country's long-haul hub and the only airport most overseas travellers need to think about. It sits in Vantaa, north of the capital, with a direct rail link to Helsinki Central in roughly half an hour. If your trip is Helsinki plus a train or a domestic flight north, book into HEL and treat the rest as a connection.

For a Lapland-focused trip, flying straight north saves a long transfer. Rovaniemi is the main Lapland gateway and a short drive from town. Kittilä puts you at Levi in about 20 minutes and Ylläs in about 45. Ivalo serves Saariselkä and Inari in the far north. Winter charter traffic concentrates on these airports, so December seats and cabins sell out early.

Turku handles the southwest and the archipelago, with a small terminal and short distances. Tampere and Oulu also take domestic and some international traffic, useful if your plans start inland rather than in Helsinki.

Book the Helsinki-Vantaa train ticket at the station or in the operator app; the airport station is under the terminal and signed throughout. For Lapland airports, pre-book a transfer or pick up a hire car, because winter arrivals often land after the last public bus.

Winter is the trap. Snow, ice and darkness slow road transfers, and December charter prices spike. If you are heading to a resort, book the airport transfer with the accommodation rather than improvising on arrival.

Domestic flights between Helsinki and Lapland run about 1 h 20 and cost roughly €80–300 (2026 estimate). Compare that with the VR night train, which takes 12–13 hours but saves a hotel night and can carry cars.
