Set up the essentials before you leave home, because Nadi arrivals Wi-Fi is unreliable and you will want a working map the moment you clear customs. Google Maps is the single most useful app: download the Fiji map for offline use, since 4G covers the towns and most of the Mamanucas but is patchy in the northern Yasawas and the interior. Offline maps also cover the boat routes around Port Denarau and the Coral Coast road.

WhatsApp is the default channel for anything you need to arrange. Hotels, tour desks, dive shops and taxi drivers all use it, and a message usually gets a faster reply than a phone call. Facebook Messenger works too. Save the numbers of your resort, your transfer driver and your boat operator in WhatsApp before you travel.

There is no Uber or Bolt in Fiji. Taxis in Nadi, Suva and Lautoka are metered or negotiated, and outside the towns you arrange a driver by phone or through your hotel. Agree the fare before you get in, and keep small notes for change. For boats between the islands, the operators publish schedules on their own sites and take bookings by email or phone rather than through an app.

For money, install your bank or card app and switch on travel notifications so a blocked card does not strand you. Cards work in towns and resorts with a 3–5% surcharge, and ATMs are common in Nadi, Suva and Lautoka. Mobile money (Vodafone M-PAiSA, Digicel MyCash) is how many locals pay, but visitors rarely need it. Carry cash for taxis, markets and small vendors.

In cyclone season, November to April, add the Fiji Meteorological Service app or bookmark its site for warnings. Translation is rarely needed: English is an official language and widely spoken in tourism, though a Fijian phrasebook helps in villages. For general trip planning, a notes app with your bookings and a currency converter cover the rest.
