Figueres is a small Catalan city of about 45,000 people, 55 minutes from Barcelona by high-speed train and 15 minutes by car from Costa Brava beaches. The Dalí Theatre-Museum is the reason most people come, and it is the most-visited museum in Spain after the Prado. One night lets you see the museum without the midday crush and still reach the coast, the Empordà wine country or the French border the next morning.

- Summer weekends and cloudy beach days push museum queues up; go at opening on a weekday.
- The castle interior opens on seasonal hours and can close without much notice: check before walking up.
Figueres is a calm small city; the real risks are pickpockets around the museum and station in summer, heat in July–August, and the tourist-trap restaurant strip on Carrer de la Jonquera.
