Fier
Skip Fier as a base. Sleep in Berat or Vlorë and use Fier only as the bus change for Apollonia, 12 km away.
Fier is a flat market and oil town on the SH4 between Tirana and Vlorë, and almost nothing in the city itself justifies a night. What does justify the stop is Apollonia, the Greek-Illyrian-Roman site 12 km away, plus Ardenica Monastery and the Bylis park further out. Most travellers pass through on the Tirana–Vlorë or Berat–Vlorë bus and get off for half a day, not a stay.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk in 15 minutes. City buses cost 30–40 lek and suburban ones 80–100 lek (2023 fares), but routes and posted timetables are unreliable. For Apollonia you need the bus toward Pojan, then a walk or a taxi. A car or a rented bike is the practical way to reach Apollonia, Ardenica and Bylis in one day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'tungjatjeta'; avoid: Ignoring elders at a gathering
- Gestures: Confirm yes/no in words; avoid: Assuming a nod means yes
- Hospitality: Accept coffee or raki; eat what is offered; avoid: Refusing everything
- Besa: Keep your word and appointments; avoid: Promising what you cannot do
- Conversation: Ask about family, food, the diaspora; avoid: Jokes about the communist era or 'mafia' clichés
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses and minibuses leave from four different unmarked spots: Tirana buses at Rruga Rauf Nallbani, Berat minibuses at Rruga Jani Bakalli, Vlorë collective taxis near the Gold centre on Rruga Ramiz Aranitasi. Ask your hotel which one is live today.
- The new bus station 1.5 km out serves no local routes; do not walk there expecting a bus.
- Apollonia and Bylis have almost no shade: carry water and go at opening.
- Summer heat and traffic on the SH4; drivers overtake hard on the two-lane stretches.
Fier is a low-risk town for travellers; the real hazards are the SH4 traffic, unmarked bus stops and summer heat at the ruins. Standard precautions at night around the centre.
