Fethard
Fiodh Ard
Go for half a day if you are already driving Tipperary: the medieval walls and two churches take 2–3 hours. Skip it as a base without a car.
Fethard is a Norman walled town of about 1,700 people in County Tipperary, settled from 1201. Its draw is the surviving medieval fabric: a stretch of 13th-century town wall, a 15th-century parish church, an Augustinian friary and a small horse museum. There is no bus from Cashel or Cahir, so most visitors arrive by car and stay two to three hours, or one night if they want Slievenamon or the raceway.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
- Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
- Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
- Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
- Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos
Scams and watch-outs
- No bus from Cashel or Cahir: Kavanagh's 393/396 links Clonmel and Thurles only, three times Mon–Sat.
- Holy Trinity Church opens for mass only; check times before you plan around it.
- Several castles (Knockelly, Cramps) stand on private farmland: view from the road, do not cross fields.
- Mobile signal is patchy on approach roads; download an offline map.
- Emily's is cash only.
Very safe. The real risks are narrow lanes with no footpath, wet stone steps at the friary and castles, and a long walk back in the dark if you miss the last bus.
