Ferrara
Give Ferrara one full day and one night: the Este castle, the Duomo and the Renaissance streets are a walkable half-day, and the rest is best done by bike.
Ferrara is a walled Renaissance city in Emilia-Romagna, 30 minutes from Bologna by train on the Venice–Bologna line. Its UNESCO centre is flat, compact and bike-friendly, with a moated castle in the middle. Most travellers see it as a day trip or a single night between Bologna and Venice.

Get around
The centre is flat and small: walk or rent a bike at the station or near the Duomo. Bikes are the local default and the fastest way to the walls and Palazzo Schifanoia. Buses cover the outer streets; the region sells an integrated Mi Muovo ticket (check current fares).
