Fernley
Skip Fernley as a base: it is a truck-stop town on I-80, 30 min east of Reno. Stop only for fuel, food or the speedway.
Fernley sits on Interstate 80 about 30 miles east of Reno, in the Lahontan Valley where the Truckee River ends. It grew as a warehousing and truck-stop town and has little for a visitor beyond a casino or two, a bowling centre, a dirt racetrack and a reservoir 15 minutes south. Almost everyone passing through is driving between Reno and Salt Lake City or heading to Fallon. Treat it as a break in the drive, not a destination.
