Fayetteville, West Virginia
Fayetteville
Base here 2–3 nights for the New River Gorge: raft or hike one full day, drive the rim and Bridge Day sights the next. Skip it as a day trip from Beckley.
Fayetteville is a small town on US-19 that sits at the northern edge of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Almost everyone comes for the gorge: whitewater rafting on the New and Gauley rivers, rock climbing, mountain biking and the New River Gorge Bridge. The town itself is one small historic downtown with a handful of places to eat and sleep, so you stay here for access, not for the town.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Cell signal drops in the gorge and on river sections: download maps before you drive.
- Rafting and climbing are guided activities with real injury risk: use a licensed outfitter and follow the briefing.
- Bridge Day closes the bridge to vehicles on the third Saturday in October: plan around it or book far ahead.
- Many restaurants and outfitters run seasonal hours; check before you drive out.
- Rural roads are narrow and deer are common at dusk.
Fayetteville is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are activity risks: water, cliffs and trails. Use a licensed outfitter, wear the helmet and PFD, tell someone your route, and treat the gorge rim as exposed ground.
