Faroe Islands itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

The Faroes are small but slow to cross: single-lane roads, subsea tunnels, weather that closes boats and mountain paths. The parent plan for a first trip is one base in Torshavn for 4–5 nights with a hire car, driving out to Vagar, Eysturoy and the northern islands, with a spare weather day for every three planned.

Pick your length from what you want to add, not from how many sights you can tick off. Seven days covers the classic loop. Ten days buys a Copenhagen stop and a softer pace. Two weeks adds Suðuroy and, if you want, Iceland. Three weeks is for slow travel, hiking and waiting out bad weather without losing the trip.

Days 1–2: land at Vagar, collect the car and drive the tunnel to Torshavn. Settle in, walk Tinganes and the harbour, and use the first afternoon for the short Vagar stops — Mulafossur at Gasadalur and the Traelanipa cliff path — if the weather is clear. Book paid-access viewpoints online before you go; several are on private land.

Days 3–4: Eysturoy and the north. Drive the subsea tunnel to Eysturoy, stop at Gjogv's gorge harbour, then continue to Klaksvik. From Klaksvik take the ferry to Kalsoy for the Kallur lighthouse ridge if the boat runs; otherwise walk Klaksvik and the harbour.

Days 5–7: move your base to Gjogv or Klaksvik for two nights. Use one day for Mykines puffins (June–August, weather-dependent, book ahead) and one day for Saksun and Kirkjubour on Streymoy on the way back south. Keep two of the seven days unplanned: this is the single most useful thing you can do in the Faroes.

Ten days works best as Copenhagen 3 nights, Torshavn 5, Gjogv 2. Atlantic Airways flies Copenhagen–Vagar; flying out the day after your planned last Faroe day absorbs a cancellation without wrecking the rest of the trip.

In the Faroes, keep the 7-day shape and add one full weather day plus a slower Eysturoy day. In Copenhagen, use the time to reset before or after the islands: it is a city break, not a Faroe substitute.

Two weeks lets you add Suðuroy, the southern island reached by ferry from Torshavn, for 2 nights, then cross to Iceland. The Norröna ferry sails to Seyðisfjörður in east Iceland in summer, which is a long drive from Reykjavik; flying is simpler and faster.

In Iceland, 3 nights in Reykjavik and 4 on the south coast is a workable split. If your dates are tight or the ferry schedule does not fit, drop Iceland and give the extra days to the Faroes — the islands reward a slower pace more than a longer list.

Three weeks is for hikers and for travellers who would rather wait out a storm than drive through it. Split the time across Torshavn, the northern islands, Suðuroy and Vagar, and leave roughly five days unassigned.

Use the slack for multi-day walks, village stays and repeat visits to viewpoints that were fogged in the first time. Distances are short; the constraint is weather and boat schedules, not kilometres.

Book the car and the boat crossings before you book anything else in summer. Mykines and Kalsoy sailings are seasonal and weather-dependent, and a cancelled boat is the most common way a Faroe itinerary breaks.

Subsea tunnels and some ferries carry a toll, so budget for them and check current rates. Fuel, food and accommodation are the main costs; see the cost page for bands.

Puffins are around from about May to mid-August, which is also the busiest window. Outside summer, expect fewer boats, shorter days and more closures — build in more slack, not fewer days.
