Farmington
Farmington, New Mexico
Base in Farmington 2 nights for Aztec Ruins and the Animas river trails; add a night if you are driving to Chaco or Mesa Verde.
Farmington is the practical base for northwest New Mexico: a small city on US-64 and US-550 with motels, a hospital and the region's only real cluster of restaurants and grocery stores. The draws are outside town — Aztec Ruins 20 minutes northeast, Salmon Ruins 15 minutes east, Shiprock west, Chaco Canyon about 2 hours south on dirt roads. Two nights covers the near sites; three or more only pays off if you are working the Four Corners loop by car.

Get around
You need a car. Farmington has no useful bus network for visitors and no passenger rail; US-64, US-550 and US-491 meet here. Distances are long and cell coverage thins out toward Chaco and Shiprock — download offline maps and carry water.

- Chain motels, gas, grocery and the mall; easiest if you have a car and an early start to Aztec or Chaco.
- Downtown / Main Street
- Walkable to the river trails, breweries and the Foutz gallery; fewer beds, book ahead in summer.
- Aztec (20 min northeast)
- Small-town motels next to Aztec Ruins; quieter, and it puts you closer to Mesa Verde.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are bigger than they look: Chaco Culture is roughly 60 mi south, much of it unpaved, and the last stretch is slow and rough after rain.
- Summer afternoons regularly top 95°F; hike the ruins and badlands before 10:00.
- Some trading posts and galleries sell machine-made imports as handwoven; ask about the weaver and expect to pay accordingly for real work.
- Alcohol sales on the Navajo Nation are restricted — do not carry alcohol onto tribal land.
- Gas up in Farmington or Bloomfield before heading toward Chaco, Shiprock or the Four Corners monument.
Farmington is a normal small-city stop; the real hazards are heat, long empty drives and unpaved roads. Lock the car at trailheads, carry more water than you think you need, and treat Chaco's access roads as the main risk of the trip.
